Topics We Will Cover During Class
The virtual Trick AND Treat virtual workshop will cover these training exercises and topics:
Halloween is just around the corner, which means that your dog will be helping pass out candy on trick-or-treat night! But how can you make sure he doesn't bark all night long? These exercises will help with both prevention and training. You'll learn a few tricks to get rid of any pesky barking habits, build your dog’s confidence around novelty, and prevent door dashing on Trick or Treat night.
How to stop barking at the doorbell or when someone knocks on the door.
Did you know Halloween is the second most common holiday dogs go missing? We will cover how to set up your entryway to prevent door dashing immediately, as well as ideas for more advanced training setups at the door to prevent door dashing.
How to use desensitization and counter-conditioning to help decrease barking when your dog can see/hear someone at the door, especially spooky dressed-up Trick-or-Treaters!
How to use desensitization and counter-conditioning to help decrease barking and fearfulness around novel items like Halloween decor that is new, moves, or makes sounds. As well as sounds related to Halloween like children laughing, door opening and closing, and more.
What you SHOULD and SHOULD NOT do when trying to make your dog comfortable with new activities - especially around the holidays.
*Please note: Remove all prong/pinch collars, choke chains, slip leads, and e-collars/shock collars before class. Especially e-collars/shock collars or invisible fence collars (when safe to do so) that beep or make sounds before correcting the dog. When introducing new sounds, we do not want your dog concerned about corrections from the collar after hearing a novel sound we introduce. It can cause the training process to take longer.
Items Needed For Class:
You will need a few items for this class:
- A few different high-value treats
- Dog toys your dog likes
- OPTIONAL: A practice doorbell (only if you have a doorbell at home is this needed; something like this can work if you cannot use your real bell easily)
- A piece of wood or wooden furniture nearby to simulate a door knock
- Any motion-activated or push-button activated Halloween decor you can find that makes sounds or moves to practice with (Examples from Target are in the videos to the left, but something like these from Amazon could work too: Spooky Doorbell (Doubles as Practice Doorbell Item Too), Moving Ghost, or Moving Cat ) HIDE these items and don’t show them to your dog before class, please.
Pro Tip: If your Halloween decor has a TRY ME button, do not remove this button. It makes it easier to use during training practice and make sure you have batteries in your prop before class, please.
ALSO OPTIONAL, BUT FUN: Feel free to dress your pup or yourself up for Halloween for the class! This is a Halloween-themed class after all!
