ENROLLMENT CLOSED UNTIL FALL - Farm Dog Prep: Life Skills Around Distractions Group Class

About Our Farm Dog Group Class:

Often thought of the farm version of the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizenship exam, this group class will help you and your dog prepare for AKC Farm Dog exam and a farm lifestyle.

Even if your dog is a city pup, this six 1-hr group class program will help your dog learn to work around unique distractions like chickens and farm-related noises, walk on a loose leash, patiently wait through gates and while in their kennel, and calmly accept the presence of other dogs and strangers. We have chickens and farm equipment on site for use during this class.

Once your course is complete, you will get to attempt the AKC Farm Dog exam for real! The testing fee and our 1-hr video orientation course is included in your course cost.

If they pass, students will need to seek a second Farm Dog Judge to give them the exam again to earn their Farm Dog title, as per AKC rules and regulations that state you must complete the exam successfully twice under two different judges to earn your title.

We will cover the following topics:

  • Passing other dogs and strangers on loose leash

  • Accepting petting from a Farm Dog judge

  • Accepting loud noise distractions, like lawnmowers or tractors

  • Calmly waiting at gates and in a crate/kennel

  • Obedience around livestock, like chickens

  • Basic obedience needed to be a farm dog

  • Standing for exams to check paws and fur for burrs

Who Can Attend:

Class requires up to date vaccines and have a negative result on last fecal test given in the last year to enroll. Dogs must be at least three months old to join the class and nine months of age to officially test for the Farm Dog exam.

Only dogs that have never killed or attacked other animals can enter this class, must be friendly with strangers and other dogs as well.

How Much and What Is Included:

Class is $250 for six 1-hour group classes (no more than five dog/handler teams per class). This class comes with a free 1-hr video orientation, a clicker, and a waived AKC Farm Dog and Canine Good Citizenship testing fee. Plus there is a chance to win prizes during class time!
